What is Continuing Professional Development?

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is the practice of undertaking a range of activities, both formally and informally, in order for practicing hypnotherapists to expand and develop their skills during their career. It exists to ensure that the practicing hypnotherapist can develop their abilities; ensure that they remain effective and safe to practice; and become increasingly capable in their chosen profession by regularly focusing on how they can become a more competent practicing hypnotherapist.

CPD can combine a diverse range of approaches to learning, such as workshops, seminars, conferences and events, e-learning programs, best practice techniques and ideas sharing, all focused for the practicing hypnotherapist to advance and have effective practicing hypnotherapist development.

The Benefits of CPD

The benefits of CPD are that it:

  • Creates a high and consistent standard
  • Maximises the potential and capability of the practicing hypnotherapist
  • Enables the practicing hypnotherapist to practice safely and effectively
  • Helps the practicing hypnotherapist become more productive and efficient by reflecting on their learning, and highlighting gaps in their knowledge and experience
  • Enables the practicing hypnotherapist to keep abreast of new developments and techniques within the field, and remain competent and effective
  • Enables you to adapt positively to changes in work/industry requirements
  • Builds confidence and credibility
  • Provides evidence of professional development
  • CPD records can be useful for supervision
  • CPD in itself promotes the concept of ‘professionalism’

What constitutes CPD?

CPD can take the form of a variety of differing activities, and doesn’t just involve attending formal courses. It should enable you to develop as a practitioner. CPD could take the form of any of the following:

  • Peer Support Groups
  • Seminars, webinars and workshops
  • Conferences and meetings around specific subjects
  • Training courses
  • Designing and providing training courses where they are developmental in essence and not a regular activity
  • General research
  • Engaging in research
  • Consideration of journals or other relevant publications
  • Book writing
  • Researching and writing articles/blogs/website content/social media posts
  • Supervision attendance
  • Case reviews with colleagues
  • Business development courses on how to improve your practice
  • Receiving mentoring
  • Health and Safety/First Aid Training

The activity must be relevant to talk therapies to be considered as CPD

How much CPD is required?

All PHN members must complete a minimum number of 25 hours CPD each as detailed in the Code of Conduct and Ethics – 15 hours must be Hypnotherapy skills related, 10 hours may be other skills such as marketing, business, etc.

How do I record my CPD?

We will be implementing an online facility to log CPD in due course, in the meantime please email details of CPD to the CPD Officer at:

Be sure to include the following information:

  • Date
  • Type of CPD
  • Venue if applicable
  • Description of CPD
  • Learning outcomes/benefits
  • How you will put what you learnt into practice
  • Number of hours

Courses

A list of current CPD courses can be found in the members area. Attendance of recognised Peer Support Groups also counts as CPD.
